Introduction to Traditional
Fencing

Four Week Course)
Each Intro Course starts on the first Wednesday
of each
month
and meets in Ridgeland for four Wednesdays in a row.
Designed to give students a hands on introduction to the Traditional Western Martial Arts of Classical Fencing and Historical Swordsmanship.
This four week course presents an overview of the original art and science of fencing as it was practiced in the 16th through 19th centuries.Live demonstrations will be given in various weapons and styles of Classical Fencing and Historical Swordsmanship taught at the Academy
Historical Swordsmanship Classical Fencing 16th - 18th Centuries 19th Century16th century Spanish Rapier 19th century French Fleuret (The Academic Foil) 17th century Italian Rapier (with Dagger, Buckler, Cloak) 19th century French Epee d'Combat (Dueling Sword) 17th century Longsword 19th century French Sabre (The Academic Sabre) 17th century English Short Sword & Buckler 19th century Italian Sciabola di Terreno (The Dueling Sabre) 18th century French Smallsword 19th century Single Stick 18th century English Stave (Quarterstaff & Half-Staving) 19th century Gentleman's Walking Cane & Umbrella Participants will be allowed to handle these weapons and have all their questions answered.
All participants will receive hands on instruction and practice in basic Foil techniques which are prerequisite to the study of the other weapons. The practical portion of this course will focus on the fundamentals of footwork, offense, defense, and bladework, using various fencing weapons while teaching students basic techniques which apply to all of the historical and classical weapons. Upon completion of this course students will have a solid foundation upon which they may build with continued instruction through private lessons and/or group classes in the fencing style and weapon of their choice.
Completion of this course qualifies students for membership in the Mississippi Academy of Arms. The Academy offers numerous opportunities for further training and advancement in fencing through novice, beginner, intermediate, and advanced group classes, private instruction, recreational fencing, open fencing sessions, workshops, clinics, tournaments, classic duels, historical trips, dinner & a swashbuckler socials, rank and rating advancement, and instructor training and certification.
COURSE DETAILS

Date: This four week course repeats every month (except December), starts on the first Wednesday of every month and meets for four Wednesdays in a row.
Day: Wednesdays
Time: 5:30 - 6:00 p.m.
Location: In the Club House of Harbor Pines Community. Located at 701 Harbor Pines Dr. in Ridgeland, MS. Take Lake Harbor/Spillway Road heading toward the Reservoir. Turn right onto Harbor Drive at the last stop light before the ramp to the levee. There will be a Self-Storage Facility on your right. The road curves to the left and goes past the leasing office. It then curves to the right. The Club House will be on the right side of the road with white columns in front.
Cost: $35 Fee includes use of all equipment: (Fencing Jacket, Mask, Glove, Fencing Weapons)
Clothing: Wear comfortable clothing which allows freedom of movement, such as sweat pants, warm-ups, t-shirts, tennis shoes, running shoes, or court shoes. No shorts please. This course starts at 5:30 p.m. sharp, so please arrive a few minutes early.

The Mississippi Academy of Arms is Mississippi's first, oldest, and largest fencing academy, only traditional fencing salle, and only source of Classical Fencing, Historical Swordsmanship, and Theatrical Fencing under the direction of a nationally certified instructor and professional Fencing Master Apprentice.
